GROWING OLD
Old is relative. 14 years is considered a good lifespan. Some live up to 20
years.
- Dog is considered mature within 3 years
- Dog is considered senior within 7 years
Tendencies
- Dog will slow down in general activities eg walking, running, eating,
jumping
- Increase sleeping, barking, habitual behaviour
Dogs more than 8 years old usually suffer CDS
(Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome), a gradual deterioration of cognitive
abilities. Symptoms include:
- Frequent toilet accidents
- Sleeping much more or much less
- Acting confused
- Failure to respond to social stimuli
Senior care program should include:
- Visiting the vet 2x per year
- Health screening (blood test,
blood pressure, ECG, ocular tonometry, dental work)
- Nutritional counseling
- Supplements
- More patience from the owner
